As much as we keep on being upset about Lotus' departure from the US-market we know all to well that wouldn't be prepared to daily-drive one. And as we are pretending Miata's the answer to everything, we know it suffers from a lack of power and stiffness, sometimes it even, well, rusts. So you need...a Porsche. No?
Yeah, you do indeed. While you're reading this, you probably think: 'Why didn't he mention *some sportscar*, why do I need a Porsche?' Well, you are a driver. You want a 2-seater sportscar with a manual. Ok, there are options. But how about the kindest concept of engine placement: midship? So there is still the Alfa 4C, for example. But you will drive this car often, very often. You will sit in its seats for hours when you commute to work if the weather is nice. You need a car which lets the driver having his/her space while being not too loose inside. It needs to have suffcient power, while being balanced and economically driveable, which does not mean anything else than resonable fuel economy if you won't push it too hard. To this point, you could argue that the 4C still was a contender. But now comes an aspect that will change that situation.
If you buy a new car, you want it to be reliable. And that is just what you get with a Porsche. In every major city, there's a dealer which will offer you great service for good money. Also Porsches are very reliable in general, as is proved every year by german statistics about defects on cars coming in for government security check, which saw the 911 finish in the top ranks in more than one category every year.
In the past couple years, Porsche lost its way, some may think, first with the Cayenne, then with overweight 911s and last but not least with press cars only handed out with the PDK. But you can pass all these errors away by choosing right and thus still having an awesome breed of sportscar for a fair price:
It's gonna be a Cayman, that is clear after what I pointed out. Also it is honest about itself being only a 2-seater and nothing, not even a bit, more.
Now I'd take mine in speed yellow out and yachting blue in, but that is open to every one, as they offer you no less than 16 combinations for free.
So, what do you really need to add?
I went for a fire extinguisher ($145)
The seats are standard alcantara ($0)
A must for me is the georgeous Sport Design steering wheel ($250) (below)
So, that was all. An extraordinary, driver-oriented, midship, prestige sportscar with 275 HP.
It comes in at $53,985, and it'd be the perfect car to buy and keep and drive for decades.
The driving machines are out there, you just got to find them.

I would agree, but there are too many reviews by trustworthy sources (and untrustworthy ones) maintaining that the 981 Boxster/Cayman is simply too sterilized and clinical to be all that fun. And if a sports car is not fun, why is it called a sports car?

I think you are leaving out a couple of good options. Corvette being one and the hot muscle cars being another. For purity they have 3 pedals no fancy gizmos and NA V8 engines. That being said I am a fan of the Cayman but I've heard from reviews it might not be as good and as pure as the previous generation

You're right, its the perfect all round sports car DD. But, and its a large butt, for the money I'd be hard pressed to ever buy one. $54k for 275hp is just overpriced.

it's because of the damn electric power steering. The steering was just so perfect before. You really can't get better steering feedback in a car with power steering than a hydraulically assisted Porsche.

I wanted to get a Cayman but needed 4 doors as we have two small kids and can't justify having it as a third car; I settled for a new Audi S4 and between the build quality and driving dynamics it fits the bill quite nicely for a daily driver.

That is exactly my problem with the new generation cars. That and the 4 wheel steering in the new GT3. Like I don't want or need either of those things.

It's disgusting and just uncalled for in a sports car
